Tourism officials for Galveston Island, which was struck by Hurricane Ike on September 13 want to get the word out that both the Hotel Galvez and Tremont House sustained relatively minimal damage. Hotel Galvez is on schedule to reopen to the public on Wednesday, October 15 and The Tremont House, which had several feet of water on the first floor, will reopen in early 2009. Several Galveston attractions have reopened and two major events— the Lone Star Biker Rally and Dickens on the Strand— are still scheduled for December. Like many coastal towns, Galveston relies heavily on the tourism industry and is working quickly to recover and reopen for business.
