Volcanic Ash Causes Alaska Airlines Cancellations

Agents with clients traveling to Alaska should keep an eye on volcanic activity within the Aleutian Islands. Three different volcanoes have erupted in the area within the past month. The latest, Kasatochi, forced Alaska Airlines to cancel 41 of its due to the plethora of ash permeating the atmosphere. Okmok began erupting July 12 and Mount Cleveland  began erupting July 21.

Flight cancellations began Sunday evening and affected flights between Alaska and Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle and Vancouver. The airline also warned that the volcanic ash cloud could affect Anchorage, Fairbanks and southeastern Alaska destinations.  The cancellations were instigated after the National Weather Service issued a warning Sunday for an area in Southeast Alaska.

Alaska Airlines is attempting to reschedule passengers on the affected flights. Travelers can check flight status at www.alaskaair.com or (800) ALASKA-AIR
